Recipes for making Crafts/Props glue/paper mache

http://www.familiesonlinemagazine.com/craftrecipes.html#.UbmECZXmKLI

"Making homemade craft recipes will save your family money, but more importantly, you will be building memories with your children that will last a lifetime. Adult supervision is recommended."

Here are my two favourites from the list:

CREPE PAPER CLAY
1 cup flour
1 cup salt
Crepe paper
Mix together flour and salt in a small bowl. Tear crepe paper into small pieces and place into a larger bowl. Add enough water to crepe paper to cover. Soak one hour or until most of water is absorbed. Pour off excess water. Do not squeeze. Begin adding flour and salt until it becomes a clay-like substance. Form clay into interesting shapes. Let dry and apply either a varnish or a glue and water mixture to seal.

SLIME
1 cup Elmer’s glue
1 cup liquid starch
Food coloring
Mix glue and starch together until it forms a ball. If the mixture is sticky add more starch. Add a few drops of food coloring. Kids love this!

Chinese New Year Peformance, 2010 4th Grade girls at ICS. Good Job!

Saturday, February 13, 2010

CHINESE NEW YEAR SKETCH 2010 (4th Grade Girls ICS)
INTRO/dialogue:
1: Stop Stop! Stop Stop! Everyone just stop for a minute! Give me that microphone. Stop the music!
ALL: What? What’s going on? _____ what are you doing? Etc.
1: We’ve all heard this song a thousand times already. And none of us even knows what it means! Am I right? I mean, here we are up here dancing and Gong xi’ing to each other, but it doesn’t MEAN anything to THEM.
[points to audience, then says to someone in the group]
Do you know what it means? Gong Xi Gong Xi nonsense!
[to someone else]
Do you?....See? Absolute nonsense! Yes, Gong Xi is a greeting of blessing, and this song repeats it a million times so we all know that part, but SERIOUSLY! The verses?
I’ve been asking around all through the Chinese New Year holiday and even Chinese Singaporeans don’t really know the words!
2: [shares the microphone] Excuse me [¬name], I know what the words mean.
1: YOU DO????
2: Yeah.
1: Well help us out here!
3: So do I!
1: Well why didn’t you say so?
2: I’m saying so now.
1: Really? Oh wow. That’s great! Take over here and let’s learn what the song means before we go any further with the dance.
2: Okay then. Let’s back it up with the lyrics. The first verse says….
3: Which means….
2: The second line is…
[and so on for verse 1. They all sing accapella the Gong Xi part, Then translate v2 referring to the slides.]
1: Let’s all try it with the music!...You all can sing along if you want to try!
[power point comes on with words, but BEFORE they sing]
4: Excuse me. Before we go on with the rest of the verses, can we take a break here?
All: Okaaay. I thought that’s what we just did…
4: I’m just going to ask you all to stand up. That’s right. Stand up! Now, Do you know how to count in Mandarin?
All: YES! Yi, Er, San, Si, wo….
4: No! No! I’m asking them. Do you? Say it after me. YI [they repeat and it’s not good] Ummm….
Maybe you can do that a little louder? Come on. I’ve heard you out there on the playground. How about you try it with OUTSIDE VOICES? Okay? YI ------ Hen hao! That’s better! Now, ER! …. Good!
Now together: YI,…. Er…… Fei chang hao!
Now I want all of the rows, starting from over here on the right to count off, YI, Er, Yi, Er, all the way across to the other side of the gym!
Number Ones, number “YI”, all you there on the right raise your hand if you’re ready…[wait until many of them raise their hands] GOOD! okay, ready Shu!
Yi er yi er….[kids on stage start it off]
1: Now, We’re going to teach you the dance! At the beginning, all you YI’s take out your Hong Bao with your right hand and shake it like this above your head.
[hong bao kids, you show them how it’s done]
2 Ers, since you can’t really run around the Yis, then we’ll just have you go like this.
[Skippers, model for them, the marching in place.]
1: When it gets to the Gong XI part, all the Yi’s turn to your LEFT, and all the ERs turn to your RIGHT.
[kids on stage do it]
When I count to three, you try it. Ready? 1, 2, 3.
All: Oh no no no no! that was a mess!. We need to try that again!!!
1: Okay, maybe it was bad because I didn’t count in MANDARIN! Let me say it again, When it gets to the Gong XI part, all the Yi’s turn to your LEFT, and all the ERs turn to your RIGHT. When I count to three, you try it. Ready? Yi Er San!
All: Bu zou! Not bad! Not bad!!
1: Now the first time you turn this way, you say:
All: Gong xi Gong xi. [turn] Gong xi ne.
1: Good. Then, you turn to the opposite person and say the next one, just like we did up here. Okay? Try it!!!
ALL: “Gong xi Gong xi Gong xi Ni.”
1: Not bad! I think you got it!
2: Okay, since you know what to do let’s try the song again! Sound man, let’s take it from the top!
[ENTIRE SONG. After verse 2 “Dong Tian yi dao..” ]
5: You guys are pretty good dancers! This is the longest break between verses!
6: So we’ll take a minute to tell you what the next verse means this:
6: The heavy snow has melted, the plums are about to blossom
the endless dark night is over, we hear the crowing of the rooster.
(at another break between verses)
6: The last verse means this:
5: after so much difficulty, with so much discipline
how many hearts are looking forward, to the news of Spring.

[END. Wave as you march off to the drums and firecrackers.]

WHILE Mrs. C is in Egypt

ELEMENTARY
The kids are working on writing up an interesting or funny story about living cross culturally/being a TCK/something dramatic or conflict ridden!
('cause that's what makes drama interesting!)
If they email it to me, I will write it into a sketch for the group to read and perhaps perform (they can let me know if they want to remain anonymous - I will make up fictional characters)

MIDDLE
1. searching the internet, or library for scripts. skits or sketches that they might be able to do in chapel, or that they just REALLY like. FIND ONE and make enough copies to read March 10th.

2. I THINK THIS CAN BE DONE FOR YOUR quiet times for Bible Class.
Pick one of the Blessings of who you are according to God's promises in Scripture. Pick one of the verses and memorize it in the NIV version. We're going to turn it into our own short dramatic/audience interactive piece when I come back.

3. You can start memorizing your part in the play we read today. THE GREAT ESCAPE (thanks Cameron for finding it!!!)

Read about the training from last year! See photos.

Hope you all enjoyed learning and stretching those drama muscles. I know I was hard on some of you, but you're good and I'm a perfectionist!
Sorry, I lost my camera a few weeks ago, so I have to get another one before we put any new photos up! :-(
I still have my phone camera! When I was a kid in school I never thought i'd turn out to be such a techie!

We missed SAM and AN JIAN cause they'd gotten sick this week. These kids were BRAVE to sing and dance in CHINESE, among the shoppers - with out the safety distance of a stage! That's why they are "Drama Workout Special Forces"

We met today with a group of 18 kids (no 7th graders...that's WEIRD)
It was fun, though it will be even MORE fun when everyone comes.

We did
  • diamond ensemble
  • mirrors
  • My name is + an action game
  • "Who's your neighbor?"
  • A "Character walk" for the first time ever and
  • Machines (I thought the exploding B52 bomber was the most interesting. Go 4th grade boys!)

The next few posts here you'll the info we handed out today. If you weren't able to come (or didn't know about it in time) you can get these handouts next Monday.

PREPARE
FOR YOUR ROLE FOR NEXT WEEK: Memorize a favorite passage.

Pick a section of the Bible that you love and you’ve already started memorizing.
How much? Memorize as many verses as the grade you are in. If you write them out neatly, memorize what you’ve chosen, and bring this to drama club next week, you can have a chance to recite them to the group.

The memory verses I’ve chosen are:
(Go ahead and type them in as a comment if you want. Good practice for memorizing! Even if you don't blog it here, make sure to write it out and bring it to workout next monday.)

We’re planning a fun year of working out our acting muscles.*
Did you know that building these muscles builds your self-conficence, intelligence and creativity? It also gives you ìup frontî skills which you can use for the rest of your life!

Wonderful job on our Trip to Jerusalem 30AD. I was pleased with your performance and it seemed like the rest of the school (and parents) thought it was a special time. I'm sorry again that the sound system was a problem. I found my ipod at home on my desk. In spite of competition in practice from our Buddhist loud speakers, and rainstorms and missing cast members each week and forgetting which order you went on the verses...with the Lord's help you pulled it off. look for the video soon. Thanks to Ken A. for taping it for us.

QUESTIONS: What did I learn? What encouraging words can I pass on? What would I do over?
Cast Comments:

I'd practice my lines more and review just before the show - Benjamin
I'd have a properties helpers and a more accurate prop list so i wouldn't lose important things for the show - Kimberly
Don't rush or hurry your lines. You only have one shot at it! - Micah
"Good Job" from Josh Yi in 3rd grade. I'm glad they laughed - Anuj
We needed to be louder, no walls to bounce the sound off. My throat was stinging afterward - Cameron
As people left they had a lot of good things to say, "You did a good job," "Some of you have possible careers as actors"- Tyler
I was embarassed to be the only girl to remember "This is what we preach!" - Ami (who gets MVP for remembering!!!)
No one said anything to me afterward except my mom and dad. No one in the 4th grade or whole school! - Ellie
(go Ellie! You memorized a lot of lines in a short amount of time!)
Everyone should have memorized their lines better. Some of you were nervous and didn't do your best - Danny (which is EXACTLY why Danny didn't want to have lines in the show - he thinks these things are really important and knew that he couldn't do it in the short time we had to prepare.)
I would actually have participated - John (who's come back to drama workout after being away for awhile! yeah!)
